The Development of Children’s Gender Stereotypes About STEM and Verbal Abilities: A Preregistered Meta-Analytic Review of 98 Studies (2024)

This meta-analysis reviewed 98 studies involving 145,204 children to examine the development of gender stereotypes in STEM and verbal abilities. It found that male-biased stereotypes in fields like computer science and engineering emerged by age 6, while pro-female verbal ability stereotypes appeared by age 8. Girls increasingly endorsed male-biased STEM stereotypes as they aged. The study also revealed that boys’ STEM stereotypes declined before age 13 but increased afterward. The results highlight how early stereotypes can affect confidence and interest in STEM and verbal fields.
